Why we love Cowichan Milk Company
– Cowichan milk is grass fed (from their own fields) and is supplemented with a little grain in the winter months.
– The pasteurization method they use is slow and low. It is the lowest temperature of pasteurization that is legal in Canada (closest to raw milk folks!). It is heated just enough to kill unwanted bacteria but preserves the healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, essential minerals, and fat-soluble vitamins A, D3, and K2.
– Their farm is a circular operation all on the same site. They grow the grass that feeds the cows and the manure goes right back into the fields for fertilization.
– The milk is bottled the day before you receive it on Salt Spring. Any fresher and you would have to be under the cow!
– The vanBovens are a third- generation (and going) family of milk farmers.
Cowichan Milk Company’s dairy is pasteurized “low and slow”, leaving it as close to its natural state as possible.
Ingredients: milk, cane sugar, cocoa powder, salt, carrageenan gum, natural flavour, vitamin D3
Low-pasteurized means that Cowichan Milk will not have the long shelf life of most milks, which are pasteurized with the “high temperature, short time” method. Use within a week of opening.

Organic Sifted Rye Flour, True Grain
True Grain Mill, Cowichan
Rye is an intensely flavourful grain that can be described as the secret ingredient to crafting truly amazing bread. Rye is related to wheat and has been a staple of North and Western European diets for centuries. Our Rye is organic and is proudly grown in BC. We slowly stone grind and sift our Rye at low temperature to maximize flavour and preserve nutrients. Rye is a healthy choice because of its gluten structure and high proportion of soluble fibre. “Sifted” simply means we remove the bran. Substitute sifted rye for a portion of “white flour” in your recipes. Thank you for supporting organic BC Farmers and Millers.
Ingredients: *Stone-ground BC Sifted Rye flour. *Organic
*Packaged in Kraft paper bags made of recycled materials.

Laundry Soda (Sodium Carbonate)
Washing soda is a compound, also known as sodium carbonate, frequently used in DIY and commercial laundry detergents. Washing soda should not be confused with baking soda (a less abrasive cleaning agent), although the two compounds are closely related since they both contain the mineral trona. Washing soda and baking soda can be used together in DIY detergent recipes to remove stains, but washing soda has more of a stripping action to remove residues of oils, minerals, and fabric softeners.
Sodium carbonate can also be used to mitigate the problems associated with “hard water” — or water with a high mineral content — when it comes to cleaning clothes. Hard water makes it difficult to clean laundry completely because the minerals in the water keep the detergents from doing their best work. Washing soda “softens” the water by binding to the minerals in the water, allowing the detergents to lift dirt from fabric.

Steel Cut Oats, Organic
Organic Steel Cut Oats, Canada
Organic steel cut oats contains potassium, calcium, magnesium, several different B-vitamins and vitamin E. Additionally, oats have trace minerals, such as manganese, copper, iron, selenium and zinc. They are also full of phytochemicals, which are good for you, and contain both insoluble and soluble fiber.
Steel cut oats are made by taking the oat groats and cutting them into 2 to 3 smaller pieces using a steel blade. Steel cut oats are also sometimes called Irish oats. Steel cut oats are also more coarse than other types of oats and tend to be chewier. This gives them a hearty texture that is very filling, but it does mean they require longer soaking and cooking times. However, they are still good to use in an overnight oats recipe.
