Vermicompost is a high quality soil amendment created by red wiggler worms as they break down organic matter.

Our team of half a million red wigglers eagerly turn fresh produce scraps and sawdust from a local mill into an incredibly high quality soil amendment bursting with beneficial microbial life and balanced, plant available nutrients.

Benefits of vermicompost include:

Application

For plants in the ground: gently mix in a sprinkle of vermicompost to the top inch of soil. Water thoroughly after to ensure that the beneficial microbes stay moist and soak deeper into the soil.

For transplanting or potting new plants: mix in a sprinkle of vermicompost into your potting soil.

Smoked Sablefish, Haida Gwaii 

Known also as butterfish, this delectable fish offers a rich and buttery flavor that melts in your mouth. With its high oil content lending to a thick flaky texture, Sable Fish is a true delight for seafood lovers. This is the cold-smoked version – an absolute treat! Warm slightly and serve with charcuterie accompaniments. We like whipped cream cheese, picked red onions and chopped chives.

Sablefish is an excellent source of protein and the highest fish in heart-healthy Omega 3’s above Salmon or Tuna.

Mostly headed abroad to fine-dining restaurants (it’s a favorite as sushi in Japan and can be found on the Nobu menu) – it’s a real treat to have the Pacific Prowler bring some of these beauties back to Saltspring.

Dakini Tidal Wilds’ Bull Kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) is harvested by hand off the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island & tested for purity. Seaweeds are among the most nutritive and complete foods and are the most concentrated food source of minerals on the planet. They are nature’s perfectly balanced mineral supplement. Dakini Tidal Wilds offers customers a local choice of seaweed.

Kelps in particular are unique in their ability to safely eliminate certain heavy metals, PCB’s, dioxins and certain radioactive compounds from the body. They do this via a compound called ‘sodium alginate’. This quality makes the kelp family of seaweeds one of the most important sources of protection against today’s most harmful environmental toxins.

One of the most exciting areas of research in seaweeds is with cancer. Organic Chickpea Miso, USA

This short-term aged, soy-free miso uses garbanzo beans (chickpeas) instead of soybeans as its base. It has less salt and more rice koji (rice inoculated with Aspergillus spores) than traditional misos. Reducing the salt speeds up fermentation, while increasing the grain content makes more starch available to turn to sugar, producing a milder miso.

Ingredients: chickpeas, rice koji, sun-dried sea salt, mountain well water, koji spores

Organic  Red Soy Miso, USA

This miso is aged naturally without temperature control for 12 months in four-ton, hand-crafted Cypress, Redwood, or Fir barrels. The high soybean content in relation to the rice koji (grain inoculated with aspergillus spores) makes it necessary to age this variety through four full seasons because soybeans are more difficult to ferment, with their high protein and fat content, than the high-carbohydrate grains. This gives the aspergillus spores and lactobacillus bacteria sufficient time to completely break down the complex protein and fat molecules into their more digestible constituents.

Island Bees Honey, Saltspring Island 

Island Bees honey is raw, unfiltered and collected entirely from flowers on Salt Spring Island. You may find it is not as clear as regular store-bought honey and it may have occasional specks of hive materials that you would not see in honey that is more refined and processed. All the enzymes, propolis, and pollen grains are retained, so Island Bees honey is in the same state as you would find naturally in the beehive.

Most honey produced in Canada comes from huge fields of flowering monoculture like clover,
canola, blueberries and alfalfa.  In contrast, much of Salt Spring Island is forested and therefore, the number of flowers available to bees is much less, so Salt Spring bees collect honey from wildflowers and blooming trees instead.

This means that Salt Spring Island bees don’t make much surplus honey, but it also means that their honey and pollen is not as exposed to all of the harmful things that come along with modern intensive farming.
