Why we love Cowichan Milk Company
– Cowichan dairy cows are grass fed (from their own fields) and are supplemented with a little grain in the winter months.
– The pasteurization method they use is slow and low. It is the lowest temperature of pasteurization that is legal in Canada (closest to raw milk folks!). It is heated just enough to kill unwanted bacteria but preserves the healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, essential minerals, and fat-soluble vitamins A, D3, and K2.
– Their farm is a circular operation all on the same site. They grow the grass that feeds the cows and the manure goes right back into the fields for fertilization.
– The milk is bottled the day before you receive it on Salt Spring. Any fresher and you would have to be under the cow!
– The vanBovens are a third- generation (and going) family of milk farmers.
Cowichan Milk Company’s dairy is pasteurized “low and slow”, leaving it as close to its natural state as possible.
Ingredients: Milk, Vitamin D3.
Low-pasteurized means that Cowichan Milk will not have the long shelf life of most milks, which are pasteurized with the “high temperature, short time” method. Use within a week of opening.

Grass-Based, Lean Ground Beef
Vanvalley Farm, Cowichan Valley
• Single origin (one cow)
• Growth hormone free
• Antibiotic-free
• Soy Free
• Grass based diet- with grain supplementation in the winter.
• Plastic–free packaging (only butcher paper).
• Short, trauma-free transport to the butcher
• Sold frozenNot only can you toss the packaging in the compost (goodbye plastic!), this Holstein beef (raised for dairy) is sustainable and delicious.
Why do we raise Angus and Hereford cows for beef and Holsteins for dairy? It is primarily because the former fatten quickly on grain and can get to market quicker and cheaper (less than two years). Holstein cows are generally raised for dairy production, so they lead very different lives.
Why eating well-sourced dairy beef make sense:
Quality:
These dairy cows have been carefully bread over generations and meticulously monitored to ensure they can lead a life without needing antibiotics. There are zero growth hormones as they are not being rushed to fatten up for slaughter. Grass-fed dairy cows have spent five times more time spent roaming on pasture and developing intramuscular fat. And then, after the cows are weaned from milking, all of the energy that had previously gone into producing milk gets dispersed throughout the animal’s body. What you get is this super delicious and complex flavor you cannot find with conventional beef. It’s really unbelievable.
It’s all the rage in the culinary world –you will see retired dairy beef on the menus of San Sebastián’s three-Michelin-starred Arzak, Paris’s famed market La Grande Épicerie, and the Basque restaurant Sagardi in London.Sustainability:
While a single beef cow typically turns into 600 pounds of meat, the dual-purpose cows—those used to produce dairy and later beef—produce about 80,000 pounds of food in total, including milk, cream, butter, and beef. True- they do live a longer life and need more feed, but it is a more sustainable approach to animal husbandry.$11.90 -

Ingredients: Organic Medjool Dates
Qualities: Dates are, by general consensus, the world’s oldest known fruit. They have been grown throughout the Middle East and North Africa for over 6,000 years, a dietary staple and incorporated into almost every meal or eaten alone. Ancient cultures referred to date palms as “the tree of life”. Traditionally, dates were used to break fasts as they have high carbohydrate and sugar contents, immediately raising blood sugars and providing instantaneous energy. Medjool dates are one of the largest dates and considered far superior to any other type of date in terms of flavor and texture.

Quick rolled oats, consisting of thinner and smaller flakes, have a similar nutritional profile and the same mild taste but higher glycemic index and creamier texture, compared to regular rolled oats. They’re partially cooked by steaming and then rolled even thinner than old-fashioned oats.
They also can be prepared by just adding boiling water, stirring, and letting them stand for a few minutes to thicken, making them almost as convenient as instant oats. Either way, they make a quick and easy to digest, nourishing hot breakfast cereal (aka oatmeal or porridge), but are also used in many baked goods such as bars, cookies, and muffins, or as a base ingredient in granolas and mueslis.

Red Soy Miso – Organic
Organic Red Soy Miso, USA
This miso is aged naturally without temperature control for 12 months in four-ton, hand-crafted Cypress, Redwood, or Fir barrels. The high soybean content in relation to the rice koji (grain inoculated with aspergillus spores) makes it necessary to age this variety through four full seasons because soybeans are more difficult to ferment, with their high protein and fat content, than the high-carbohydrate grains. This gives the aspergillus spores and lactobacillus bacteria sufficient time to completely break down the complex protein and fat molecules into their more digestible constituents.
Ingredients: Organic whole soybeans, organic rice koji (organic rice koji spores, sea salt, water)
